Installing A Loft Ladder

Installing A Loft Ladder In Just A Fingersnap

Installing a loft ladder is a reasonably simple project that can be completed in just a few hours, once you have chosen the ladder type of choice and selected the position for installation. If you already have an access entry, but are tired of dragging out the ladder to enter the loft, half of the work is already done for you. All that remains is purchasing a ladder that can be installed in the opening with little or no adjustment. However, if you wish to install a loft ladder in a more convenient area, a few pointers will be helpful.

There are basically three designs from which to choose when installing a loft ladder, folding, concertina and telescopic styles. They are normally constructed of wood or aluminum. While aluminum has a higher load capacity, most people prefer the wooden ladder, which is usually reinforced for added strength. All loft ladders are designed to remain hidden in the loft area until they are pulled down for use. Loft ladders are also completely self contained in their own frame, making installation reasonably simple.

When the ladder of your choice has been purchased, the next step will be the selection of installation site. When choosing the site for installation, first check that the loft rafters will permit enough headroom for easy entry from the ladder. Choose a spot in the loft that is not adjacent to external walls and has no utilities present in the chosen area. Also, check that there is sufficient room for the ladder to be extended into the room below. Transfer the ladder’s measurements to the loft floor, running parallel with a joist. Check that the marked area is truly square, or the ladder will not perform properly. Cut a hole in the loft flooring according to the measurements, reinforcing the opening with additional joists if necessary for framing purposes.

It will be much easier to place the ladder into position with the extra hands of a friend to help lift it into place and hold it in a properly level and squared position, while you attach the screws to the joists, following the instructions that will be included with the ladder kit. Once the ladder is securely installed, access can be gained by way of a dangling cord to pull the ladder into place or use of a pole to grasp an installed latch or hook.

Installing a loft ladder will provide easy access to the large storage area that is often overlooked. Loft ladders are a very small investment that gives great returns for a few hours of time spent on installation.
